The air element is Breathe, its the pulse that gives everything life. With it we would have no life and complete silence. The air element is motion and dictates how we communicate.
Think of it this way if we don’t have control over how we are breathing it will reflect in how we behave and how things are communicated. This is the least worked with element but I do say it really depends on what you practice. The air element is actually extremely powerful and once you can feel its energy wholly using it in your practice can really bring clarity to your spell work.
Communication is key in any way of existence and air is the messenger. Think about the spring time when all your favorite plants and flowers start pollinating without the wind to carry the pollen, we would have no new life. Because air is the ruler of communication we need to think about how we connect with this element other than experiencing its power when outside. Understanding ourselves can help connect us to higher self if we learn how we best can communicate than we can speak clearly and receive and give information. A way we can do that is by looking at our birth chart. The two major planets that represent the air element are Mercury and Venus. Mercury is the planet of communication and Venus shows us how we show love. Whatever sign is in these placements can really help us by showing us how we naturally communicate as well as what we look for in other people. The zodiac signs are Aquarius, Gemini and Libra.
Because air is life we should try and think about how we can start feeling that life. Ever wonder why the biggest thing people say to start with on a spiritual journey is meditation? Because meditation is using controlled breath to help release anything that is weighing you down. When we meditate we are really breathing in new life and exhaling the old. Out with the old in with the new if you will. During spring cleaning times it can be extremely beneficial to open up your home to get rid of any stale air that has been circulating. These are all ways that we can connect with the air element but how can we use this element in our practice?
In our practice the air element shows up in other ways than you may imagine. Incense are a commonly used to set the energy of a space and reason being is because it fill the space and gives it life or purpose of the properties used. You don’t always have to use stick incense and if you are looking to connect with this element deeper, making your own incense can not only help set the energy for your space but really help set your intentions whether your goal is to benefit you or if you are doing work for another person. Herbs that represent the air element are bergamot, anise, lavender, sage, lemongrass, peppermint, lemon verbena. These herbs help promote communication, intuition, and inspiration. I always looked at the air element as one of intellect and inspiration, yes it rules communication but knowledge has to come from good communication and inspiration has to come from a good source as well.
